Will Rich Froning Retain His Crown?

Rich Froning is the reigning champ of the CrossFit Games – making him the fittest man on Earth. As the CrossFit world waits with bated breath for a threepeat this weekend, Rich Froning’s PR corps has moved into overdrive. A press release about Rich Froning’s diet and fitness regime, sent out earlier this week, made the sports pages across the planet. So how does the fittest man on Earth train and eat…?

Food: What’s Allowed and What’s Not

“A lot of people who do CrossFit eat a strict paleo diet, but I don’t subscribe to any specific way of eating. If you burn enough calories, you don’t need to,” Froning told Outside magazine. Not only does Froning not believe in sticking to a particular diet, believes in eating anything and everything . “I love apple pie. If I see one, I’m going to eat the whole thing.” He does avoid breads and pastas for the simple reason that he just doesn’t like the taste. Top that off with the fact that he doesn’t believe in supplements either and believes in getting all the nutrients you need from your diet alone. Though, at the  Muscle & Fitness AMA session earlier this year, he did talk about taking Syntha-6, Amino-X and cell mass as part of his diet.

Training: How Much & How Often

“I work out anywhere from two to five times a day, but I don’t walk into the gym with a schedule. I just make it up as I go, listening to my body and doing what I think I need to do.” In terms of sage advice for everyone out there…

  1. Love the Squat: Rich calls it an essential exercise with the squat being used in some form or another in a lot of spots.
  2. Sleep is a Must: Rich gets 8-10 hours of sleep every night. He doesn’t believe in naps but, interestingly, does favour the occasional energy drink.
  3. There is no Recovery: Like a lot of CrossFitters, Rich believes in active recovery where he doesn’t actually take a complete day off from training. “I’ll go ride my mountain bike for a couple hours once a week. You’re still working hard and moving but it’s good to have one day of training that’s not as stressful.”

With all the hype around Rich Froning, you can’t help but wonder what the other athletes are going through. And it certainly doesn’t help when the organisers put together a promotional video like this…

How do You Beat Rich Froning

Turns out, the answer is: You make the man swim… After the first event at the CrossFit Games, Rich came in… wait for it… 30th…

After two more events, Rich is sitting at a much more respectable 6th…

The world met a new king earlier this week, there’s a chance we might meet another one in three days time…
